Over the years, an increasing number of employees have begun swapping the traditional office space for the home workstation, with 50% of the UK workforce have been predicted to work from home by 2020. While the benefits of working from home are mutually exclusive for employees and employers alike – offering increased productivity, a better work-life balance and a reduction in overheads – there are a number of health and safety implications that need to be taken into account. The Work from Home e-learning course will explain the importance of health and safety legislation and procedures and how these translate into the home environment, with a particular focus on employee responsibility.

Work from Home – aims/objectives

During the Work from Home e-learning course, delegates will learn about existing workplace health and safety legislation, how it is enforced and how it continues to apply in the home. They will recognise their individual role and responsibilities when cooperating with their employer on health and safety matters, while also understanding the steps that they should take to protect their own health, safety and wellbeing while working from home.

Work from Home – course structure

Written in line with current workplace health and safety legislation, delegates will cover such topics as how to become risk aware and avoid accidents/ill health when working from home. They will also be educated on the correct protocol for reporting incidents, as well as gaining an understanding of what to do in the event of safety rules and procedures being breached.

Once they have completed all of the course content, delegates will be required to undertake a final examination to consolidate all of the knowledge they have acquired.

Work from Home – course outcomes

Following completion of the Work from Home e-learning course, delegates will be equipped with all of the knowledge required for them to comply with workplace health and safety legislation while working remotely. Once they have passed their end of course examination, delegates will be able to download and print a certificate as proof of their ability to work from home safely and lawfully.

The Work from Home e-learning course is suitable for new and existing employees of all levels of responsibility who are considering or have already transitioned to home-based work. It will also prove useful for those in supervisory, leadership and managerial positions to help them understand the procedures, guidelines and measures that must be implemented in order for their staff to remain safe and compliant while working from home.

Work from Home – course overview

Delegates undertaking the Work from Home e-learning course will cover three modules in total, followed by an online examination:

  • Working from Home overview (homeworking categories, relevant health and safety legislation and how this applies in the home setting)
  • Home Arrangements (insurance requirements, equipment, data security and what constitutes a safe working area)
  • Workplace Hazards (fire safety, slips, trips and falls, electrical safety, cyber security, manual handling etc)
  • Final Test
