In line with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, employers are legally required to assess the risks posed by noise levels in their workplace, taking action where required to ensure that the legal limits on noise exposure are not exceeded. If not closely monitored or controlled, overexposure to high levels of noise can lead to such concerns as loss of hearing and/or tinnitus. If noise exposure cannot be reduced via other control measures, employers are required to provide their staff with hearing protection, as well as adequate information, instruction and training.

What are acceptable noise levels at work?

According the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, sounds at or below 70 decibels (dB) are generally considered to be acceptable noise levels at work – anything at or above 80 dB is classed as the ‘noise action level’, at which point employers are legally required to assess the risk to employees’ health and implement appropriate control or management measures. If noise levels are 85 dB or above, employers are required to provide adequate hearing protection, as this rate proven to be more likely to damage hearing over time.

What noise level should not be exceeded in the workplace?

87dB is classed as the exposure limit value, and employers are strictly prohibited from exceeding this level of noise in the workplace.
