Slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of major injuries and lost working time in the workplace. These accidents can occur in various environments, such as offices, construction sites, kitchens, or production areas. They affect everyone. It doesn’t matter which industry you work in or whether your work is indoors or outdoors. Slips, trips and fall injuries can be so serious some people never fully recover. It is important therefore, that you learn to recognise and control slip, trip and fall hazards.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires that employers ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practicable. This means balancing the level of risk against the measures needed to control the risk in terms of money, time or trouble. This includes taking steps to control slip and trip risks.
According to statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), slips and trips are the single most common cause of injuries at work, and account for over a third of all major work injuries.
They cost employers over £512m a year in lost production and other costs and account for over half of all reported injuries to members of the public.
Employees have a duty to take care of their own health and safety and that of others. They must use any safety equipment provided.
