Roof Access - Passport to Safety Training

As working on roofs is considered a high risk activity, there are a series of regulations and guidelines in place to ensure that employees who are required to access roofs are part of their regular working activities are doing so in a safe manner. The B&Q Roof Access – Passport to Safety training course will teach delegates how to comply with the Working at Height Regulations 2005, providing them with up-to-date knowledge and practical training on how to work at height safely.

Roof Access training course – aim/objectives

According to the Working at Height Regulations, workers and contractors should have up-to-date experience and training in order to work safely on roofs. Given the different working environments and conditions surrounding roof access, it is highly recommended that they have sufficient knowledge on the particular type of roof work they are to carry out.  

The Roof Access training course is designed to cover the basic knowledge and information required for working safely on a range of different rooftops, as well as the key hazards and risks associated with roof work. This will allow delegates to know when to take action in order to reduce the risk of any workplace injuries and falls from height.  

Roof Access training course structure

Delegates will complete a multiple choice test to summarise all of the key learnings from the Roof Access training course. They will then be asked to complete a practical assessment where they will participate in an inspection of their safety equipment, determining whether or not the equipment presented to them is safe and fit for purpose.

Roof Access training course – outcomes

Following completion of the Roof Access training course, delegates will meet the criteria required for working on a B&Q roof and be compliant with Working at Height legislation. They will have an in-depth understanding of safe working practices on rooftops, recognising the risks encountered and the control measures required to improve them. Delegates will also better understand the dangers associated with working at height, the relevant legislation and guidelines and how to use access equipment, harnesses and PPE to carry out roof work safely and correctly.

During the Roof Access – Passport to Safety Training course, delegates will cover a wide range of topics related to rooftop safety and best working practices, including:

• Complying with relevant legislation affecting rooftop workers (Working at Height Regulations 2005, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and Approved Codes of Practice and Guidance)
• Hazards and risks associated with rooftop working
• Selection of the correct work/access equipment and restraint systems
• Identifying ways to prevent falls from height/permanent and temporary methods of fall protection
• Managing risk on protected and unprotected rooftops – the development of safe systems of working, including risk assessments, method statements and permits to work
• Requirements for working on third party sites

Who is the Roof Access training course for?

The Roof Access training course is suitable for delegates who access flat roofs as part of their day-to-day work, whether with their own personnel or contractors. It is especially recommended for those who do not have access to fall arrest equipment, as they will require corresponding roof access training in order to know how to operate it safely.

Please note that this course requires a minimum of 6 delegates and maximum 12.
