Short for Display Screen Equipment, DSE comprises all devices or equipment that offer an alphanumeric or graphic display screen, including PCs, laptops, smartphones and tablets. According to the Health and Safety Display Screen Equipment Regulations, employers are required to provide health and safety training for all staff that use this equipment for continuous or near-continuous spells of at least an hour during their working day.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) includes all devices with an alphanumeric or graphic display screen, such as PCs, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. According to the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, employers must provide health and safety training for staff who use this equipment continuously or near-continuously for at least one hour during their working day.

Our online DSE training, created by health and safety experts, is essential for organisations to ensure compliance with these regulations. The course covers the health risks associated with prolonged use of DSE, including musculoskeletal disorders, eye strain, and fatigue, offering practical guidance on how to mitigate these risks.

    • Experience: Any employee who uses display screen equipment for more than one hour at a time.
    • Duration: Approximately 60 minutes
    • Assessment: 10 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%.

    • Teaching method: E-learning.

Aims/objectives

The aim of this course is to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills to use display screen equipment (DSE) safely and effectively. The course covers the common health issues, risk factors and legal obligations associated with DSE use, as well as the practical steps that can be taken to prevent or minimise any adverse effects. The course also explains how the organisation's DSE policy supports the health and well-being of its employees and how to comply with it.

DSE E-learning – course structure

Please note that the DSE online training course has been specifically designed to provide delegates with awareness regarding the correct set-up and safe practices surrounding Display Screen Equipment, as well as how to avoid the risks posed by poor DSE usage. In order to practically apply the knowledge and skills acquired within this course, delegates will require further face-to-face training.

Delegates will cover a range of safe, ergonomic practices with regards to the use of DSE, including how to properly adjust chairs, screens and lighting and how to arrange desk space. They will also be taught how to adopt the correct seated and standing postures when working on DSE, as well as the importance of breaks and regular changes in activity to maximise their productivity and wellbeing in the workplace.

Outcomes

Upon completion, delegates will be able to:

  • Set up a workstation that suits their individual needs.

  • Enforce a comfortable and varied sitting posture.

  • Use additional equipment like keyboards and mice correctly.

  • Recognise the importance of regular eye tests.

  • Practice simple stretching exercises to reduce tension and stress.
