MSA Safety have developed the Latchways Personal Rescue Device (PRD) to allow those working at height to perform a self-activated rescue in the event of a fall. Combining innovative technology with a lightweight yet robust design that is suited to withstand even the harshest of working environments, the Latchways PRD safely lowers users to the ground in a gentle and controlled descent, with the rescue process lasting for a matter of seconds. This reduces the complexity of risk assessment procedures for working at height, while also significantly reducing rescue times and ensuring that a clear emergency plan is in place in the event of a fall.

How does the MSA Latchways PRD work?
Ergonomically engineered into a backpack design, the Latchways PRD is an integrated full body harness comprising a parachute type ‘rip cord’ that releases the descending system; a brake mechanism and spool with a 20m cord made from aramid rope that safely lowers the faller to the ground, and a standard harness that can be easily released to allow for a quick evacuation from the fall zone.
Latchways PRD is integrated into a full body safety harness which is available in various sizes. It is specifically designed to slot easily into the user’s everyday workwear and be easily fixable to almost any type of roof, structure or ladder, allowing them to safely and comfortably go about their daily working activities. Unlike all other forms of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) designed for self-rescue purposes, the Latchways PRD does not require any additional specialist working at height training, as activation takes place simply by pulling on the rip cord. A minimum level of maintenance is also required in the form of periodic visual inspections by a competent individual.
The product specification for the Latchways PRD R20 RH2 comprises the following:
- Descent height: 20m/65ft
- Complete maximum weight: 4.1kg (1.3 or 1.5kg harness and 2.6kg rescue device)
- Recommended user weight: 59-140kg
- Descent speed: 0.5 to 2m per second

The device also contains a secondary release mechanism, which enables a third party to activate the Latchways PRD should the user be unable to do so themselves. A Rescue Pole can also be purchased from the SOCOTEC Shop, which allows for third party activation in the event of the user being unconscious following a fall from height.
How does the Latchways PRD comply with health and safety regulations and standards associated with working at height/PPE?
With falls from height serving as the single largest cause of workplace-related fatalities and major injuries, employers and contractors have a legal duty to assess the level of risk and implement the appropriate control measures for those working at height. According to the Work at Height Regulations 2005, all work carried out from height must be planned and organised thoroughly, with an appropriate level of supervision and a hierarchy of control measures put in place. These measures should be implemented in the following order of prioritisation, with employers working up the hierarchy when the previous measure is not practicable:
- Extending equipment from the ground
- Access equipment such as work platforms or rope access
- Reducing in the distance of a fall and the consequences arising thereof
Latchways PRD is recommended for use in areas of height where access equipment to prevent falls – such as mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) – are not viable. This device also conforms to all of the required standards associated with PPE, fall protection and self-rescue. The harness complies with Z359.1.2007 and EN361:2002, the descender device meets EN 341: 2011 Type 1, Class D and ANSI Z359.4:2007, and the ‘backpack’ is successfully assessed against BS EN 13463-1:2001 equipment group 11 category 2 standards.
