BLS and AED training – aims/objectives

Delegates will develop the knowledge and practical competencies required to deal with a host of first aid situations in the workplace as part of their basic life support training. They will learn how to practice assess and manage a casualty who requires BLS, gain an understanding of when and when not to administer an AED, recognise and safely operate a defibrillator and apply the correct procedure for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

BLS and AED training course structure

Delegates will be assessed on a regular basis while undertaking the BLS and AED training course to ensure that they are following medical procedure correctly. Upon completion of the course content, delegates will be required to conduct and pass a practical assessment where they will demonstrate the safe and competent usage of an AED. Basic first aid skills will be taught throughout the BLS and AED training course, so no previous experience in this field is required.

Who is the BLS and AED training course suitable for?

The BLS and AED training course is recommended for those who have first aid responsibility and access to a defibrillator in their workplace, as well as for those who participate in voluntary or community activities where it may be required for them to provide BLS or operate an AED in the event of an emergency. Delegates who have a specific interest in learning and enhancing the necessary skills for basic life support and the safe operation of an AED will also benefit.

BLS and AED training course outcomes

Following the successful completion of the BLS and AED training course, delegates will be fully proficient in the safe, effective and competent administration of AED and CPR and will be able to put their newly acquired basic life support training into action. By passing the course, they will be able to progress onto a series of workplace first aid qualifications at both QCF Levels 2 and 3. In line with industry guidance, delegates are recommended to refresh their basic life support training 12 months after the initial course completion.
