What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is described as the process of focusing your attention on the present moment without judgment. This is most commonly developed through the practice of meditation.  Mindfulness practices have been around for hundreds of years, deriving from Buddhist traditions. Jon Kabat-Zinn – a professor emeritus of medicine - created a mindfulness-based stress reduction programme (MBSR) in the 1970s, bringing the teachings of mindfulness into popular modern culture.

By practising mindfulness, the Mental Health Foundations reports that you can gain more of an understanding of your emotions and change how you react to them. Mindfulness can also benefit your relationships, improve attention and improve concentration. Furthermore, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is used to help treat depression.

The world is fast-paced, less secure, less predictable, and has more distractions than ever before. It is challenging in modern day life not to dwell on the past or worry about the future, which can lead to mental health problems. To be purposefully and non-judgmentally attentive to the present moment, it is important to take time to be mindful.
